I always try to keep my accommodation costs at a minimum. For me, it’s not a very important part of the trip. Why? Because I’ll be out the whole day, anyway. Of course, it should be comfortable enough for sleeping, near enough or accessible enough to modes of transportation, convenience stores and cafes, should be clean and should be affordable. One must still have standards when travelling, right?
And because I travel with my kid, hostels are out of the equation but budget hotels are definitely worth looking into especially when your travel fund is not like Kylie Jenner’s.
We stayed at Chulia Heritage Hotel in Penang last January 2015. Coming from an overnight stay in Corus Hotel in Kuala Lumpur and before boarding our cruise that would take us to Phuket and Krabi, I wasn’t really looking for a first-class accommodation. Just a place to sleep in while we wait for our cruise ship to dock at the Penang Port. We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights.
It is along Lebuh Chulia thus the name. Apparently a happening place which I didn’t know at that time. Mugshot Cafe is a stone’s throw away. A very popular Hainanese Chicken Place is also very near our hotel, Junk Cafe, and my favorite pasta place, Ecco Cafe*. It’s the perfect location. But there’s more…
*Ecco Cafe new address is at No. 68, Lebuh Acheh, Georgetown. Penang 10200
The hotel itself is nothing short of amazing.
All that for 1500/night. Rooms are spacious and clean. The staff are polite and helpful. The location is perfect. There’s no breakfast. In fact, I can’t remember if there’s a hotel restaurant. But that’s not a problem coz I really am not into hotel food. I would rather eat where locals eat and at Chulia, there’s no shortage of places to eat.
